Dorm Room Tools for Success

It’s amazing how creative you become when working with a limited kitchen and storage space. In order to make healthy meals and pack nutritious snacks you need to be armed and ready with the proper utensils.

Cooler: It’s important to eat healthy snacks and meals every 3-4 hours to keep your metabolism revved and energy levels sky high.

You may be in class for 6 hours straight.  Trust me, you’re going to get hungry.  If you don’t snack on nutritious foods throughout the day you’re more likely to overeat at meals and crave unhealthy high calorie foods.  Coolers are cute and stylish these days. If you’re worried about having to lug it around all day look for a simple insulated bag small enough to throw in your back pack.

Tupperware containers:  Reusable Tupperware containers are great for keeping food fresh in your cabinets, packaging leftovers or packing a meal for when you’re on the go.

Mini Fridge:  Having a small fridge in your dorm room is the perfect way to expand your healthy food options.  A mini fridge allows you to store fresh fruit and vegetables, pre-made meals, and dairy products.  If it has a freezer department, even better, frozen fruit and vegetables are just as nutritious, but last longer.

Utensils: Have a set of eating utensils and napkins to throw in your cooler and keep in your dorm room

Ziplock bags:  An easy way to keep portion size under control is to ration out portions of your favorite snacks for the week.  Make bags of pretzels, whole-wheat crackers, trail mix, etc.  It’s quick to pack, and best of all you won’t go through the entire box while watching a movie.

Skillet/Pot:  Now you’re cooking!  Oh the possibilities…egg white omelets, seafood and vegetable stir-fry, whole-wheat pasta and light marinara sauce.  You can avoid the dining hall for the rest of your college career.
